Sitting in a cozy spot

CURRENTS #14

I've been drawn to the word inhabit lately.

For years, I’ve encouraged people to witness their thoughts—to notice them, explore them, and choose response over reaction. Witnessing has been one of my most valuable practices.

Recently, life has been asking something different.

Lately, it’s my knee that has been shaping many of my emotions and decisions. After years of physical therapy, constant pain, and an increasingly noticeable limp, I’ve moved beyond witnessing and into inhabiting.
Rather than continuing to circle the decision—researching it, questioning it, revisiting it—I am settling into it:, inhabiting it: surgery is the next step.
Did I do everything I could? Not stem cells or PRP, but nearly everything else—years of PT, strength work, alternative approaches, time, patience, hope.
As I listened more deeply—not only to my knee but also my hip, ankle, outer leg muscles, and gut—I realized daily Advil or Aleve was no longer a gift to myself. Pushing through pain was no longer effective.

My body was asking to be heard.
The surgery decision required me to INHABIT my mind in an interestingly watchful way. Daily I move between fear and acceptance:
Is it the right surgeon? The right timing? What if it worsens? What comes next? Some days I feel steady.
Some days I don’t. But I return to the body—hand on knee, breath, compassion—and imagine a future that is strong, mobile, and free.
I just learned I won’t know whether I’m receiving a partial or full replacement until the day of surgery.
How’s that for practice? Inhabiting not knowing.
Not controlling. Trusting expertise.
This is my mobility we’re talking about! Sheesh.

I’m learning that noticing a thought is only the beginning—the next step is how we meet it: with honesty, curiosity, and kindness. Loosening the grip. Staying present with what is.
Beyond body and mind, I’m also settling into place.
After a summer break, and after surgery, I’ll be Inhabiting my newly remodeled home in Montara for over two months. After years of moving between Southern and Northern California and Wisconsin—and often living in three places at once—this will be my longest stay since 2013. That was the year I moved to Mexico after recovering from my last major surgery: the titanium humerus Stanford placed in my left shoulder.
Life has a way of circling back.

Through it all, I get to INHABIT gratitude.

Gratitude for choices, for care, for support across the Bay Area, Coast, and Wisconsin.
Most of all, gratitude for you—friends, clients, students, teachers.
It is because of you that I get to practice daily. It is because of you that I get to share often.
And that is a life worth inhabiting. Lucky me.

One of my favorite 87-year-old teachers recently spent a week at the Ranch. Years ago she gifted me daily affirmations I still use. I recorded both of us speaking them— I think I have shared it before, but if you’d like a copy, email me your cell number.
I’ve also been celebrating Pema Chödrön’s 90th birthday. Her teaching—“See what you do. Do something different. Repeat.”—remains deeply alive for me.

And now the winner is… D Menaker. Congratulations!
